There’s a specific kind of dread that comes when your MacBook refuses to turn on. One minute it’s your trusted companion—whether for work, school, or creativity—and the next, it’s a blank, unresponsive screen. But take a breath. You’re not alone, and all is not lost.

Oftentimes, the issue is resolvable with some basic steps. This tutorial takes you through exactly what to do—starting with the basics and progressing toward more advanced recovery solutions.

Start with the Simple Stuff

Before diving into more technical solutions, start by checking the essentials. Sometimes the problem is surprisingly simple.

Check your power source

Ensure that your charger is plugged in securely into the wall and your MacBook. If you’re not sure, use a different outlet. Wall outlets do sometimes go bad, and it’s an easy thing to eliminate.

Check your charger

If you’re using a MagSafe adapter, check the LED light.

  • Amber = charging
  • Green = fully charged

If the light doesn’t appear at all, the charger itself could be faulty. Try plugging in a spare if you have one.

Search for faint signs of life

Look for signs like a spinning fan, keyboard backlight, or startup chimes. If you notice any, your MacBook might be on—but the screen may be the issue.

Attempt a Hard Restart

Hard restarts solve many temporary crashes and glitches. Here’s how:

  1. Disconnect your Mac from every power source and accessory.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 10 full seconds.
  3. Release and wait a few seconds.
  4. Reconnect the charger.
  5. Press the power button again.

This step alone often brings the MacBook back to life.

Reset the SMC (System Management Controller)

The SMC controls functions like power, battery, and cooling. Resetting it often resolves startup issues.

For Intel MacBooks with non-removable batteries:

  1. Turn off your Mac.
  2. Plug in your charger.
  3. Press and hold Shift + Control + Option (left side) + the power button.
  4. Hold for 10 seconds, then release.
  5. Press the power button again to boot.

For older MacBooks with removable batteries:

  1. Turn off your Mac and disconnect it.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Hold the power button for 5 seconds.
  4. Insert the battery, reconnect the charger, and turn it on.

M1 and M2 Macs handle this automatically—no SMC reset needed.

Reset NVRAM/PRAM

Sometimes incorrect settings stored in NVRAM or PRAM cause boot issues.

For Intel Macs:

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press: Option + Command + P + R
  3. Hold for about 20 seconds (you may hear the startup chime twice).
  4. Release and allow your Mac to boot.

Note: M1/M2 Macs handle this reset internally.

Boot into macOS Recovery

If your Mac powers on but fails to load macOS:

  • Intel Macs: Press power, then hold Command + R
  • M1/M2 Macs: Hold the power button until “Options” appears → Click Options > Continue

From Recovery Mode, you can:

  • Use Disk Utility to check your disk
  • Reinstall macOS
  • Restore from a Time Machine backup

Still stuck? Try Internet Recovery: Option + Command + R

Use Disk Utility to Check for Disk Errors

Once in Recovery Mode:

  1. Select your internal startup disk (usually Macintosh HD).
  2. Open Disk Utility and run First Aid.
  3. If errors appear, Disk Utility will attempt to fix them.

Note: Reformat the disk only if you’re sure your data is backed up.

Common Issues and What to Do

What Else You Can Check

Keep macOS Updated

Outdated macOS versions can cause startup glitches.
Go to: System Settings > General > Software Update

Monitor Battery Health

If your Mac is older, the battery might be the culprit.
Go to: System Settings > Battery > Battery Health

Final Thoughts

It’s unsettling when your MacBook won’t turn on—especially when it holds your files, memories, and peace of mind. But in most cases, it’s a small issue with a fix you can try yourself.
