WhatsApp is introducing a new feature powered by Meta AI to help users quickly catch up on unread messages. Called Message Summaries, the tool uses artificial intelligence to generate concise overviews of conversations — without compromising privacy, thanks to Meta’s Private Processing technology.
What Is Message Summaries?

Message Summaries is a completely optional feature now rolling out to WhatsApp users in the US (English only). It’s disabled by default and only becomes active when a user taps the “unread messages” icon within a chat — whether it’s a one-on-one conversation or a group chat.
Once tapped, Meta AI creates a bulleted list summarizing recent messages in a private window labeled “visible only to you.” According to WhatsApp, neither Meta AI nor the company itself can read the content of your messages or the generated summaries.
How Does It Work Securely?
The summaries rely on Meta’s new Private Processing infrastructure — a secure, cloud-based environment built on Trusted Execution Environments (TEE).
Meta outlines three foundational pillars behind this tech:
- Confidential Processing: User data remains protected during processing and in transit — no third party, including Meta, can access it.
- Enforceable Guarantees: If there’s any attempt to tamper with the security model, the system either shuts down or triggers a public alert via verifiable transparency.
- Auditability: Researchers and users can independently verify Meta’s privacy and security claims by auditing the Private Processing framework.
In addition, the system supports non-targetability, stateless processing, and forward security — ensuring no personalized targeting and no data retention.
